Psychotherapy Aalborg

For you who’ve tried to handle it on your own — without luck.

Hi, I’m Sif — Psychotherapist in Aalborg

I’m originally from Iceland and moved to Aalborg over 20 years ago. As an expat myself, I understand how overwhelming life can feel — especially when you’re far from home.

You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong. I meet you with warmth and presence, and together we create space around what feels heavy, so it becomes easier to be you. In therapy, you don’t have to face the difficult things alone. You get support and new ways of understanding and handling what you’re going through — in ways that can make a real difference in your everyday life.

My practice is located on Kalkskrænten in Aalborg, and I also offer online sessions.

Sessions in English, Danish or Icelandic.

Frequently asked questions

What expats and English speakers most often want to know before reaching out.

Do I need to speak Danish to come to therapy with you?
No. All sessions are offered in fluent English. I also speak Danish and Icelandic, so you are welcome to switch languages whenever it feels right.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to have sessions with you?
You don’t need a referral to see me. I work as a private psychotherapist (MPF), so you can book directly and usually get an appointment within a few days.

Many private health insurances — including those provided by employers — cover psychotherapy. Check your policy, and I’m happy to provide documentation if needed.

I also work with international employee assistance programmes (EAPs), which many expats have access to through their workplace.

Your GP can refer you to a psychologist through the Danish public health system (sygesikring), but waiting times are often 3 months or longer.

What can I expect from a session?
A session lasts 50 minutes, and for the first session I often recommend 100 minutes — it gives us time to slow down, understand what’s going on, and make sure you feel safe.

We talk about what’s on your mind, and I gently guide the conversation so what’s underneath becomes clearer — your patterns, your reactions, and what’s actually making things difficult.

Some sessions are mostly talking; others include simple body-awareness exercises to help things feel a little lighter, if that feels right for you.

How many sessions do I need?
It varies. Some people come for a short focused process of 4–8 sessions; others stay longer for deeper work. We adjust the pace together, and you decide when you feel ready to stop.
Can my partner join sessions?

I don’t offer couples therapy, but your partner is welcome to join you if it helps you feel more at ease — especially in the beginning. Some expats prefer having their Danish or international partner with them for support, and that is completely okay.

What if I'm in crisis right now?
I offer urgent appointments within 24 hours when needed — call me directly at +45 25 26 20 20. If you are in a mental health emergency or having thoughts of harming yourself, please call 1813 (Region Nordjylland psychiatric emergency) or 112 immediately.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. I offer online therapy sessions for clients who don’t live in Aalborg or prefer meeting online.

Many expats in Denmark choose online sessions because they’re flexible and easy to fit into a busy schedule.

Whether you’re in North Jutland or elsewhere in Denmark, online sessions are a flexible option and work well for many clients.

Is therapy confidential in Denmark?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is confidential. I follow the Danish ethical guidelines for psychotherapists (MPF), which means I don’t share information with your doctor, employer, or anyone else. The only exception is if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else — and if that ever became relevant, we would talk about it together first.
